Tips for designing a pull-up banner
Pull-up banners are a popular marketing tool for point of sale displays, events or functions, trade shows and showrooms.

But with so much information competing for people’s attention, how do you create a pull-up banner design that attracts attention?

Pull-up (or roll-up) banners are usually printed on polypropylene banner stock and come with a retractable stand, making them easy to transport and reasonably lightweight. Their portability contributes to their popularity, making it even more important to create a design that stands out from the crowd.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR PULL-UP BANNER?
We recommend having a clear direction for what you are aiming to achieve with your banner before proceeding to the design phase. For example, is the banner intended to:

• Develop brand awareness
• Drive traffic to a website
• Generate leads
• Promote an offer or deal

Keeping this goal in mind will help you develop a banner that contributes to your marketing goals.

1. CONSIDER USING A DIFFERENT SIZE OR SHAPE
Most people tend to default to standard pull-up banner shape and sizing - vertically oriented and around 850mm wide by 2000mm high. However, using a non-standard shape and size can set your banner apart.

It is possible however to have different shapes and sizes that may better suit your brand or purpose. An extra wide banner could be great in a shop window or as part of a trade show display. Keep in mind though that larger sizes will likely be heavier to carry around.

Some of the pull-up banner sizes available at Express Print & Mail include:

600 x 1600mm
1000 x 2200mm
1200 x 2200mm
1500 x 2200mm
1800 x 2200mm
2000 x 2400mm
3000 x 2400mm

2. BE MINIMALIST
Keeping things simple allows your main message or brand to really stand out. Here are some ideas for keeping your pull-up banner design simple:

• Minimise the number of colours (for example black and white plus a single colour), red, white and blue, or white with two complementary colours
• Keep the text to a minimum and use a bold san serif font
• Use large blocks of colour
• Use bold graphic elements.
• This design from the Kawana Chamber of Commerce on the Sunshine Coast pull-up banner is a great example of simplicity used for impact.

3. GO DOUBLE-SIDED
Double-sided pull-up banners offer double the exposure in the same amount of space. They’re ideal for large spaces or situations where your banner will be in the centre of a room or store.

Repeat the design on both sides or continue your message on the reverse side. If you’re using different designs front and back, ensure there is continuity of style. This can be achieved by using a consistent footer or a similar look and feel with slightly different messaging.

4. PLACE IMPORTANT INFORMATION AT THE TOP
The information at the bottom of pull-up banners can be obscured by people and other signage or displays.

If using your banner for events where people will be seated (especially when there is no stage) it is important to place critical information in the top half.

5. CONSIDER SPLITTING YOUR MESSAGE ACROSS MORE THAN ONE BANNER
A highly effective way to use pull-up banners is to convey your messages across multiple banners. For example, a suite of banners that includes a main company banner plus complementary banners for each of your products or ranges.

Another method to achieve this is via a continuous graphic element that creates a visual journey. Your pull-up banners then work to tell a story, each building on the next, as if they are one large banner or display.

6. HAVE A SINGLE KEY MESSAGE
Find a way to deliver your message succinctly. If you have a powerful company tagline, this might be a good place to start.

Long sentences can generally be slashed to a few words. Single words can be highly impactful on a well-designed banner and help to convey the essence of your message without taking up a lot of space.

7. USE A STUNNING IMAGE
Every picture tells a story. How can you tell your story in an image? If you have professional images of your service or product, perhaps there is one that would translate well to this vertical format. An abstract or incomplete image can also ignite people’s curiosity.

A combination of photography and graphics can deliver an interesting effect, especially If you are using stock images.
